What is a firewall?

A firewall is exactly what it sounds like, it's a wall or a barrier, meant to protect agains fires, but I am not talking about fires here. A properly configured firewall helps keeps online predators from accessing your computer and your personal data.

This page will show you how to install ZoneAlarm personal firewall. When configured correctly, ZoneAlarm offers solid protection against hackers and other on-line intruders. The best part about it is that ZoneAlarm is free and istalling it is easy! Read on....

Versions: There are two versions of ZoneAlarm: This document refers to the free version which is available for personal use only.

System Requirments: Windows 2000, XP


To Install ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall
  1. Download ZoneAlarm directly from here - click on the button that says "Download Free ZoneAlarm". Save the file to your desktop.
     
  2. After the file has finished downloading double click on the file to start the installation process.
     
  3. Choose which directory to install ZoneAlarm into. You can leave it as default. Click the Next button.
     
  4. The first screen gives you a choice of which version of ZoneAlarm you want to install - select ZoneAlarm (as opposed to Select ZoneAlarm Pro which gives you a 15 day free trial of the professional version) and click Next.

  5. If you choose to install ZoneAlarm the next screen you will see if the Firewall Screen - click Finish.

  6. The setup process will begin.
     
  7. The next screen is the Welcome Screen. Read it and click Next.

  8. The next screen is where you will Configure Web Surfing Access - select Yes (Recommmended) click Next.

  9. You should now see the Configuation Successful Screen click Done.

  10. Next you will be prompted to restart the computer, click OK.

  11. After rebooting the ZoneAlarm Tutorial will appear Read it. It will help you understand how to use ZoneAlarm correctly.
     
ZoneAlarm should now be protecting your computer from online intruders. You can tell ZoneAlarm is running by looking in the System Tray (on your computer screen in the lower right hand corner near the clock) and checking for an icon that looks like one of these
